There is a common saying that, “He who dies with the most toys wins.” The truth of the matter is that life does not consist in the abundance of things a man (or woman) possesses (Lk 12.15).
We brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out (1 Tim 6.7). A man once tried to bring his gold with him to heaven. When St. Peter met him at the pearly gates he laughed and said, “Why did you bring pavement with you?”
The Apostle Paul wrote to Timothy, his son in the faith, “For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows. (1 Tim 6.10).” But how can we lay up for ourselves treasure in heaven?
One way to lay up treasure in heaven is by obeying Christ's commands to “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature (Mk 16.15).” “Teaching them to observe all things I have commanded you (i.e. preach the gospel).”
To preach the gospel to another simply ask them if they have heard the good news, then tell them, “Christ died for our sins, he was buried, and he rose again the third day (1 Cor 15.3-4).” This is the gospel according to the scriptures and it saves every one that believes (Rom 1.16). By telling it to another in person with our mouth we allow them to believe on Christ and be saved (Jn 6.47 & Acts 16.31).
Being obedient to Christ's command to preach the gospel is an act of our will once we know what the gospel is (See 1 Cor 15.1-4). We choose to either obey or disobey.
Let's not spend all our time and energy laying up for ourselves treasure on earth that bring no lasting satisfaction. Instead let's lay up for ourselves treasure in heaven by preaching the gospel and teaching them that believe to preach it (Mk 16.15 & Mt 28.20).
