Some say that to be saved a person must repent of their sins, but the Apostle Paul says, "By grace are you saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast. (Eph 2.8-9)." (Please see SAVED for a definition of 'saved'.).
Sometimes I come up against people who say a person must repent and be baptized (In their church of course) to be saved. It doesn' make sense. Christ says - "Verily, verily I say to you, He that believeth on me has everlasting life (Jn 6.47, also Jn 3.15-16 and Acts 16.31)." My experience shows that a person is born of God the instant they believe on Christ after the gospel is preached to them. I see people transformed into a new creature right before my eyes as I tell them the good news in person with my mouth (Eph 6.19). After they have been born again I enjoy fellowship with them, which is a marvelous thing (See 1 Jn 1.3). I call it familyship (See FAMILYSHIP on www.preach-the-gospel.org.).
God leads others to repentance after they are saved. The holy Spirit within believers convicts them of their sins. An unsaved person does not have the holy Spirit in their heart to convict them. Therefore they love their sin and continue in it until somebody preaches the gospel to them and they believe. "We catch'em, God cleans'em." Our Father in heaven corrects his children (Heb 12.6) and has infinite patience with us. It took God more than 30 years to lead me to repentance after I believed on him, and still I am far from being perfect.
It's a fallacy to expect a person to repent over night by telling them to repent or by praying a prayer (See THE SINNER'S PRAYER on www.preach-the-gospel.org). Only Christ can do this work in a person, so instead of telling others that they are sinner's and must pray a prayer of repentance we ought to be about our Father's business of telling them the good news that they might believe on Christ, them teaching them to preach the gospel as well to multiply the gospel seed (Mk 16.15 & Mt 28.20). God will sanctify them that believe on Him (1 Thes 5.23).
The most important thing is that we preach the gospel to others, allowing them to believe on Christ and be born again into his kingdom (Mt 6.33). This vital act is easily accomplished by telling them that - "Christ died for our sins, he was buried, and he rose the third day (1 Cor 15.3-4)." The way we do it is by first asking them if they have heard the good news (Gospel means good news.). The gospel is the power of God to save every one that believes (Rom 1.16) when we tell it to them in person with our mouth (Eph 6.19).
Remember: the goodness of God leads us to repentance after we become saved through the preached gospel message (1 Cor 1.21 & 4.15)..
